Frequently asked questions

Is this tool free?

Yes. Calchemy tools are free to use in your browser.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The tools are designed to run locally in your browser unless clearly stated otherwise.

Why does egg size matter?

A smaller egg has less mass to heat through, so it reaches a given doneness faster than a larger egg at the same boil. The calculator shifts the guide time earlier for small eggs and later for extra large ones.

Why does starting temperature matter?

An egg straight from the fridge starts several degrees cooler than one left at room temperature, so it takes a little longer to reach the same internal doneness. Room-temperature eggs get a shorter guide time.

Are these times exact?

No, they're a practical guide based on typical rolling-boil times. Altitude, pan size, how many eggs are in the water and personal taste all shift the ideal time, so treat this as a starting point and adjust to your own stove.
