How is this calculated?
The paper needs to reach around the box and fold over both ends, so the tool adds twice the box height to the width and to the length, plus a small overlap allowance.
Why add extra for overlap?
A little spare paper makes folding and taping much easier - the calculator adds a small margin by default so you're not cutting it exactly to size.
